Cardinal offense quiet in loss to Padres

Jedd Gyorko singled in Yangervis Solarte with the go-ahead run with two outs in the sixth inning and Tyson Ross and the San Diego Padres beat the St.

Matt Holliday grounded to third baseman Solarte, who threw home to get Matt Carpenter for the second out on a play that was upheld on a crew chief’s review.

Carpenter avoided the tag after Rene Rivera caught the ball and blocked the plate, but he also missed the plate and Rivera tagged him out.

Padres: Right-hander Ian Kennedy, who missed his scheduled start because of a left oblique strain, is scheduled to throw on the side Wednesday.

Cardinals: Right-hander Joe Kelly (2-1, 3.90) makes his first career start against Padres.
