Highland Park captures mixed doubles title

After falling short the previous two seasons, Highland Park’s Phillip Quinn finally got to drape a gold medal around his neck.

Quinn and partner Madison McBride defeated Hillcrest’s Zane Kohrs and Anne Gilliam 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 for the Class 5A mixed doubles state championship Friday at the George P.

Quinn and McBride become the fifth mixed doubles team from Highland Park to capture a state title.

Kohrs and Gilliam fell short in their quest to become Hillcrest’s first champions in mixed doubles, winning the first set but losing the next two.

No girls doubles title for Highland Park Lett, a senior, walked onto the court one final time Friday with doubles partner Katherine Petty as she tried to capture her first doubles title.

Lett and Petty fell short, losing to Alamo Heights’ Fiona Crawley and Brittney Wilbur 6-4, 6-4 in the 5A girls’ doubles title match.
