Leicester’s veterans do us proud

On the local club scene, men’s Premiership League holders, Carisbrooke of Knighton, got off to a flying start with 5-4 win over the highly-fancied Leicestershire club, while in the women’s premier event, 2014 champions Loughborough Town had an emphatic 8-1 win over Roundhill of Evington.

In the county’s oldest inter-club competion, The Leicester Mercury Cup, the holders of the mixed doubles knock-out event, Roundhill, defeated Charnwood in the first round, while last year’s runners up, Carisbrooke, eased past Ashby Castle into round two.

There was further good news for British tennis fans as Andy Murray lifted his second successive clay court title at the Masters Event in Madrid, emphatically dispatching clay court king Rafael Nadal in straight sets in the final.
