McEvoy named Hearst Connecticut Media Girls Golf MVP

Catherine McEvoy’s impressive performance at the state tournament recently was a microcosm of her star-studded golf career at Greenwich High School.

The standout round gave McEvoy medalist honors at the state competition for the third time in four years and tied the bow on a career that was like a gift to coach Marie Shimchick and the Greenwich squad.

“To leave with a win at the state tournament my senior year was something really special,” said McEvoy, who graduated from Greenwich High School on Tuesday.

Indeed, placing third at the FCIAC Championships after winning the title four straight seasons, inspired the Cardinals and McEvoy who is the Hearst Connecticut Media Girls Golf MVP for the second consecutive year.

“Finishing third at FCIACs was definitely a little disappointing for us, we all wanted to win the FCIAC title again, but it didn’t turn out the way we wanted,” said McEvoy, a four-time All-State, All-FCIAC Team selection.

“Every year a handful of players are capable of winning at states, so I knew I had to play my game,” said McEvoy, who was named the FCIAC Player of the Year three times (2013, 2015, 2016).

Shimchick knew she had a unique player in McEvoy, who was presented with the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Girls Golf Player of the Year Award four years in a row.

“My dad (Kevin) had a big influence on me, he was the first person I played golf with and he drove me to all my tournaments,” said McEvoy, whose home course is Innis Arden in Greenwich.

“I was in contact with the coach throughout my fours years and I felt it’s a place I can excel as a student and golfer,” McEvoy said of attending Michigan State.

Though golf is an individual sport, in high school and college it’s also a team sport and playing on the team got me ready for Michigan State.”
