MTV extreme athlete Erik Roner dies in skydiving accident during charity golf tournament

Skydiver Erik Lars Roner, an MTV extreme athlete, was killed Monday when he flew into a tree during a charity event, authorities said.

Roner, 39, of Tahoe City, Calif., was part of a team performing at a charity golf tournament when he hit a tree and became entangled about 9:45 a.m., the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said.

A skydiver died after hitting a tree during a show Monday morning in Placer County.

Roner was a professional skier, BASE jumper and a member of the extreme sports Nitro Circus Crew, which was featured on MTV.

“That Erik had an amazing family two beautiful, beautiful kids and an amazing wife.” Chad Kagy, a BMX athlete and co-star on Nitro Circus, wrote on Facebook that they’d lost a member of the show’s family.

The Squaw Valley Institute said in a statement that Roner regularly donated his time to the nonprofit organization.

“The Squaw Valley Institute is mourning Erik’s loss, and their deepest sympathies are with his family and friends at this time,” the organization said.
