Orlando Magic Might Trade Arron Afflalo & Glen Davis

It doesn’t seem like the Orlando Magic are going to make the playoffs anytime soon, so it makes sense that they start trading away their most expensive players for more draft picks or young players, and that means Arron Afflalo and Glen Davis might not stay with the team till the end of their contracts.

It’s not only about money. Tobias Harris and Victor Oladipo are the two most promising youngsters on the team next to Nikola Vucevic, but their development might be held back if they don’t get enough minutes due to the presence of Davis and Afflalo in the lineup.

Davis is making $13 million over the next two seasons, but he hasn’t played a game since late January due to another injury. He averaged 15.1 points and 7.2 rebounds for the Magic last season, but played in only 34 games. When healthy, the 27-year old Power Forward might make a very attractive player for teams to trade for, but with his health issues and uncertainty regarding his ability once he comes back, it might be a problem finding anyone that wants him for both of the seasons he has left.

Afflalo had his best season ever in 2012-2013, averaging 16.5 points per game while playing at the Small Forward position for the first time, and getting more minutes than ever before (36 a night). He is a more expensive player, with a $7.75 million salary per season over the next two seasons, and has a player option for 2015-2016 worth $7.9 million. He might be slightly expensive, but he’s in the prime of his career and has been relatively productive, and will be for any team that picks him up.

The Magic are in rebuilding mode, and a long one. They’re not going to win a lot of games over the next two years or make the postseason. Afflalo is the easier player to move, but it’s quite likely that both of them won’t be with the team by the end of next offseason, and possibly even earlier.
