Lakeshore Tennis Club celebrates 100th anniversary

In the last 100 years, the Lakeshore Tennis Club – or the Civil Service Tennis Club, as it was known until 1973 – has withstood everything up to and including world wars, debates for relocation, and dips in the popularity of tennis in Regina.

Throughout the next few weeks, the club will be playing host to a number of events to celebrate the history and memories of the club, which opened on March 22, 1915.

Members of the club, then made up of government employees, would compete against players from the many clubs throughout Regina.

When Regina played host to the Canada Summer Games in 2005, the club expanded to the eight courts it has today, and since then the membership numbers have been slightly above 300.

Ray Jacoby, who has been a member for roughly 50 years, recognizes that the club is very family-oriented, and he intends to keep that theme going throughout the anniversary celebrations.

On Canada Day, the club is hosting an open house at which members of the public can try the sport, take lessons from Olympic tennis player Brian Gyetko, and learn about the history of the club.

McMahon would like to use the anniversary to celebrate the club’s history, but to also get people to think about the club’s future.
