Huntingtown golf claims bragging rights
Through two weeks, Huntingtown’s golf team had earned five wins and sported a pretty 5-0 record but had not really put together a score to be proud of in the process.
The Hurricanes made progress towards that end Wednesday afternoon, shooting a 162 to take a narrow two-stroke decision from county rival Northern at Twin Shields Golf Club in Dunkirk the Patriots’ home course.
William Garrett fired the low round of the day, carding a 36 to lead Huntingtown (6-0) to the win.
Huntingtown beat Northern by six strokes in 2014 in addition to Wednesday’s win.
It not only kept the team unbeaten on the season and gave it bragging rights over a county rival, but it was the last regular season match the teams will play at Twin Shields, as the course is scheduled to close at the end of this golf season.
I think both Northern and Huntingtown have great golfers and it was a great competition today,” Huntingtown head coach John McGuffin said.
“Taking it all in, to win here at Twin Shields, the years I’ve played here personally and then the teams playing here, it’s truly an honor to win here on this ground against a good Northern team at this point in the season.
