Huntsville boys golfers get ‘momentum builder’

The Hornets handily beat a team they may see in the regional tournament and blew past a pair of district foes.

Led by junior Jackson Hunter, who was the Division I individual medalist runner-up, and sophomore Lance Scott, the Hornets finished fourth behind 6A teams Klein Oak, Montomery and Klein at the Huntsville Boys Spring Classic at Raven Nest Golf Club on Friday.

Following a gusty opening round on Thursday, the Hornets, who were playing their first tournament in nearly a month, were determined to improve on their first-round 324 team score and climb the standings from their fourth-place position.

“We’ve got a little bit of disappointment leaving the tournament because we felt like we could’ve played better, but there’s no question that this was a solid tournament for us,” Huntsville golf head coach Marcus Evans said.

“To beat all the 5A teams in the field and lose to just three very good 6A programs we still felt like we could’ve played better and I know we could have but it’s still a solid way to end the season as we get ready ready for district, regional and hopefully beyond tournaments.” One of the big takeaways, according to Scott, was that the Hornets hung tough with Class 6A teams, which will pay dividends in the district tournament, scheduled for April 4-5 at Gleannloch Pines Golf Club in Spring.

Among the teams that were in the field that the Hornets may expect to see in the future were District 18-5A squads Bryan and Bryan Rudder, as well as possible Region III opponent Port Neches-Groves.

The Hornets now have a little more than a week to fine-tune their game before facing off against their district opponents for the right to advance to the Class 5A Region III tournament, which is scheduled for April 12-13 at River Ridge Golf Club in Sealy.
