DeGrom’s baby watch leaves home opener
DeGrom, the Mets’ scheduled starter for the home opener Friday against the Phillies, said he was unsure if he would pitch if the baby is born before then.
Steven Matz and Bartolo Colon would be the primary candidates to pitch if deGrom doesn’t, according to manager Terry Collins, but Matt Harvey on normal rest also is a consideration.
Though some players last week had expressed an inclination to watch, the Mets bench remained largely empty during the pregame ceremony in which the Royals received their world championship rings.
The Mets will receive their NL championship rings in a private gathering on Thursday, according to Collins.
Commissioner Rob Manfred said MLB is onboard with a new smokeless tobacco ban that Mayor Bill de Blasio will sign into law in New York that includes events at Citi Field and Yankee Stadium.
