Boston is known to never want to go more than five years, but might make an exception to bring back the pitcher they dealt away to Oakland at last year’s trade deadline.
One seriously interested observer in all this is Max Scherzer, who’s looking for $180 million or more after turning down the Tigers’ $144-million offer last spring.

There’s not a bunch of Tigers buzz at the moment — there usually isn’t until the winter meetings are a day or two old anyway — but other teams in the American League Central are creating some headlines.
As for the White Sox, there have been reports they are interested in closer David Robertson, who wants four years and $50 million, and A’s starter Jeff Samardzija.
