Goalkeeper Zach Richter keeps his feet in soccer
Zach Richter’s dream of being a professional soccer player took a hit when he broke his back after his junior season at Naperville Central.
Richter, 22, became a referee and is considered a rising star in the profession.
He has several years of experience officiating high school games and has worked professional indoor and men’s amateur leagues.
“From what I know, he’s destined to be an MLS referee someday, perhaps a FIFA referee if he continues to progress.” The officiating seed was planted in Richter’s mind during a game with Naperville North in 2010.
“The referee pulled into a handicapped parking spot, put on two knee braces and got on the field,” Richter said.
Richter soon became certified as an Illinois High School Association official along with his father, Bret.
The emergence of young officials such as Richter and Lichtfuss’ 27-year-old son Scott is crucial for the high school game, which faces a severe shortage of referees.
Richter has solid advice for aspiring referees.
“In soccer it’s always been about the players, so come in with a humble attitude, recognizing that it’s about the game and the players and the school,” Richter said.
