Golf outing for America’s Bravest is the biggest

We’ve had golf outings galore throughout the season and they have all served a worthy cause.

In addition to raising needed funds, the golf outing has been the catalyst for bringing people together in the manner of reunions. There is nothing like a day out in the fresh air on the greensward of a golf course with friends.

That will be the case for the eighth annual “Golf Fore America’s Bravest,” sponsored by the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, on Wednesday, Nov. 11 at three of four of our local courses.

It would be at all courses except for the Parks Department rule where as one course must be kept open for public play.  The sound of a cannon will echo over our borough at 10:30 a.m. and signal the start of play at Richmond County Country Club, LaTourette and Silver Lake by 400 fans anxious to be a part of this most impressive event ever to hit Staten Island.

It’s hard to fathom just how much comes out of this golf outing with Stephen Siller’s name etched in the logo.

It brings together hundreds of golfers and sponsors onto the courses to the biggest cocktail and dinner party at Nicotra’s Ballroom at the Hilton Garden Inn, as well as the reunion of all who will never forget 911.

There will be many (non-boring) speeches by our police, fire and other departments as well as veterans.  There will be awards and recognition for so many who were there on Sept. 11, 2001. You will never find a better feeling of camaraderie among 600 people in one big ballroom.

Most impressive is the purpose of the foundation. Building of customized smart homes for those catastrophically injured service members. Twenty-four homes have already been built across the country including the just completed one in West Brighton for triple amputee Sgt. Bryan Dilberian and Brendan Marrocco’s home in Princes Bay.  21 more are presently under construction or in the design stage.

This is not a short-range plan.  Now in its eighth year, the Northfield Bank, with CEO John Alexander (a Vietnam vet) has been the title sponsor for the past four years.

All dinner sponsors, including Richmond County Savings, Signature Construction Group, TD Bank, Denino’s Restaurant, South Shore Rotary, Dignity Memorial Funeral Providers, Investors Bank, Staten Island Advance –- silive.com, Ben-Jo Trucking, Louis L. Buttermark & Sons Inc., Legacy Insurance, are back for the fourth year. That alone is a strong indication of strength and faith in the Foundation.

The folks who run the event are said to have plans to build 200 homes across the USA for “America’s Bravest.”  It is interesting to note that while most golf outings turn over 70 percent of the proceeds to the cause, this event sends 91 percent to the foundation and just 9 percent goes to administrative costs.

MOVING UP

Back in 1991, we introduced a young professional named Chris Johnston who traveled from Canada and worked at both LaTourette and Silver Lake pro shops.

We found him to be an excellent instructor and a very creative guy with great ideas in the area of “teaching tools” for golfers.

It wasn’t difficult to see that Johnston was determined to make his name in the teaching golf world.

Anyone who would hitch-hike from Dorval, Canada, to La Quinta, Calif., for a teaching seminar by Craig Shankland and Bill Strausbaugh, shows something.  He worked his way around some of the best USA golf courses as a PGA member and instructor never giving up on his “swing tools.”

He is currently teaching at Royce Brook G.C. in New Jersey and while he has appeared in many magazine articles regarding his methods of teaching as well as his “tools,” he has never been more delighted than to appear in GOLF TIPS magazine.

While he is in the current issue, he has been signed to publish his ideas and devices throughout 2016.  Johnston has created some great use for the “noodle” (a cylindrical solid foam piece) used in swimming pools.  Johnston applies the noodle to all facets of learning experience and the item is well-worth the read.  Golf Tips Magazine is available at newsstands like Barnes and Noble.

THE CHERRY LANE CUP

The Cherry Lane Cup, an annual competition, is taking place Sunday (today) at the Silver Lake Golf Course pitting some of the best golfers from the West Brighton area in a 27-hole contest.  The tournament is named after Forest Avenue which was originally named “Cherry Lane.”

SILVER LAKE WINS

Silver Lake Golf Course came out on top in the Staten Island READER’S CHOICE AWARDS after some 3,000 votes were cast in the Sports and Recreation section.  Richmond County was named second, LaTourette third and South Shore was fourth.
