Medford boys soccer team clinch GBL title

When we last checked in with the Medford High boys soccer team, the Mustangs were in the middle of a history making movement.

Coach Mike Petrides and his team have enjoyed a solid 4-1-1 second half showing, earning a ticket to the tate tourney and share of the Greater Boston crown on the process.

Cugno was on top of his game picking up his 12th shutout of the season, aided by a swarming Mustang defense unit.

The Mustangs opened the scoring three minutes into the contest, before conceding the game-tying tally late in the first half, ending the shutout streak.

“We started slowly, but then the floodgates opened in the second half and we were able to pull away,” said Petrides.

“It was a good game for the boys to regroup and bounce back after the tough game against East Boston.” Owen Miller gave Medford the lead scoring 20 minutes into the game, before leaving at halftime with a concussion.

“After coming off the emotional high against Malden, I felt like this was a trap game for us,” Petrides said.

“Joe was our 12th man at the beginning of the year and with Owen Miller out these last two and a half games he’s stepped into the center midfielders role and been a beast for us,” Petrides said.

As of press time, the Mustangs didn’t have a timetable for Miller’s return, but Petrides remains optimistc.
