Pac-12 title with UCLA men’s tennis team
Puget, who hadn’t played singles since last year’s NCAA tournament, returned to UCLA’s lineup to defeat Michael Grant 6-4, 6-1 within seconds of Karue Sell knocking off USC’s Eric Johnson 6-3, 7-6 to lift the Bruins to a second conference postseason tournament title in a row as part of the 114th Ojai Valley event.
UCLA suffered a 4-2 loss April 18 to USC in both teams’ regular-season finale, but Bruins coach Billy Martin decided to juggle his lineup with Puget returning at No.
USC then took a 2-1 lead with Yannick Hanfmann defeating Giron 6-4, 6-2 and Ray Sarmiento posting a 6-3, 6-4 win over last year’s finals hero Clay Thompson.
But the Bruins pulled even with Gage Brymer defeating Max de Vroome 6-2, 6-4 to shift the attention to Puget and Sell on the Libbey Park south courts, where UCLA also clinched the championship last year.
Zoe Scandalis advanced to the women’s singles championship against UCLA’s Jennifer Brady and reached the Invitational doubles final with Brynn Boren against Arizona State’s Kassidy Jump and Joanna Smith.
Giuliana Olmos moved on to the Invitational singles final against Cal’s Klara Fabikova and will also play in the doubles championship with Kaitlyn Christian, who became the first female in conference history to reach four doubles finals, against Stanford’s Kristie Ahn and Carol Zhao.
