Tiger Rests until Open
World number one, Tiger Woods, has revealed he has been advised to rest until July’s Open in Scotland due to an elbow problem that troubled him during the recent US Open at Merion.
The injury clearly bothered Woods during his week at Merion, despite the player insisting otherwise, playing a big role in him finishing way off the pace on 13 over par, 12 shots behind eventual champion Justin Rose.
Doctors have now advised him to rest while he undergoes treatment for the next couple of weeks until the third major of the year at Muirfield in Scotland, where he’ll be looking to win a third Open Championship title.
“I was examined after I returned home from the US Open, and the doctors determined I have a left elbow strain,” said Woods, who has been forced to withdraw from the AT&T National at Congressional.
“I have been advised to take a few weeks off, rest and undergo treatment. I’ll be ready to go for the British Open, and I’m looking forward to playing at Muirfield.”
After such an impressive start to the year, Tiger’s disappointing week at Merion was something of a surprise to fans who enjoy sports like golf. The fact he was struggling with injury goes some way to explaining his troubles, but the world number one won’t have been pleased with how he had performed in Philadelphia.
The break may end up being a blessing in disguise for the 14-time major winner if he can arrive in Muirfield fully fit and refreshed, where he will once again start a tournament as favourite for the title.
The first half of 2013 may have been successful for Tiger in terms of titles but it won’t have been easy for a player who has spent much of the past six years struggling with injuries.
