Trifecta of Devil teams open playoffs Tuesday
A trio of competitive Davis High sports teams open their Sac-Joaquin Section postseason runs at different venues around the area Tuesday.
Winners of the new Delta League, the Blue Devil boys tennis and girls soccer teams will be looked on as favorites in their respective tournaments, while the DHS boys golf squad could make some noise as well, despite going slightly under the radar with a second-place finish.
“I honestly believe that we’re just as capable as any of those teams to win the sectional tournament and get to NorCals and once you get there, it’s just a one-day tournament,” Ronning said.
After winning the Delta League in an undefeated fashion, the Blue Devil boys tennis team also will begin its playoffs Tuesday, taking on either Downey or West a pair of at-large qualifiers at the Davis High Tennis Complex.
Though no Devil was able to win an individual Delta League title possibly due to No.
1 player Dan Segedin’s injury DHS was able to pick up the Delta League doubles title Friday when sophomore Victor Li and junior Chase Kellison defeated teammates Louis Pak, a senior, and sophomore Jasper Murphy.
He would have almost certainly qualified for the (Individual finals), but they want to win the section (team) title,” said Blue Devil head coach Dale Hersch.
Similar to the tennis squad, the Davis girls soccer team enters Tuesday’s playoff opener against No.
The Devils are looking to get back to their winning ways in the playoffs after losing 2-1 to McClatchy in the 2014 first round.
Playing in the new Delta League this spring, Blue Devils won their first outright title under fourth-year head coach Sara Stone.
