Underestimating Victoria Azarenka’s appetite

There’s a reason Victoria Azarenka is still playing like a starving teenager turned loose at an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Victoria Azarenka became the first player since Kim Clijsters in 2005 to sweep the Indian Wells-Miami double in the same year.

With the win, Azarenka joins Steffi Graf (1994, 1996) and Kim Clijsters (2005) as the only women to win the back-to-back Indian Wells and Miami WTA premier mandatory events.

Nevertheless, Azarenka has now won five of the highest-level WTA events — more than any other current player besides Williams — including three in Miami.

Azarenka has had no trouble sustaining her motivation this year, despite gorging on wins.

Azarenka has frequently said (she repeated it again on Saturday) that during her long periods of injury, she never doubted her game and drive to come back.

The tours will move to Europe in the coming days and weeks, and the red clay there has always been problematic for Azarenka.

Azarenka isn’t nearly as poor a clay-court player as some suggest.

Azarenka wins Miami Open, adds to recent haul Victoria Azarenka completed a rare Indian Wells-Key Biscayne double Saturday by beating Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 6-2 to win the Miami Open.
